Rolas Islet - One Foot in Each Hemisphere
The Paradise...
About 15 minutes by boat from the port of Ponta Baleia, crossing Guinean Golf, we get to zero degrees in the cartographic coordinates - on the equator line, dividing the northern and southern hemispheres.
This islet is practically a resort and the harbor is right in front of the hotel reception, and the village chapel is half a dozen steps away.
The population of this islet is approximately 200 people living mainly from tourism (working for the hotel).
The main and almost only economic activity is tourism.
This is the ideal place for resting, walking and diving.
In this earthly paradise, we offer you the following:
Watch the dolphins;
Scuba diving and snorkeling.
If you dive or practice scuba diving, you can enjoy the magic of the underwater world, hundreds of colorful species, an enchanted world under the sea;
Take a walk on the islet with vegetation smelling of grass and virgin bush;
Visit Café Beach;
Visit Tambor Beach;
Visit the Equator Standard, a small monument that marks the passage of the equatorial line through the Rolas Islet.
It was erected in 1936 and contained (before being vandalized) an inscription, kept inside the standard, which read 'From the geodetic and astronomical works done by Gago Coutinho from 1916 to 1918, in São Tomé, at the initiative of Eng. Rebelo de Andrade and, with the support of all the settlers, it was concluded that the geodetic Ecuador passes in this point.
The monument is based on a polychrome base, representing the world map, in a scenery that is composed by the verdant landscape and the Atlantic.
